1. Princess Mononoke

hello and welcome to Part 1 of my ??-part series scoring Studio Ghibli movies by the Ghibli Bingo card below, made by harmonyzing on tumblr. This will allow us to determine which movie is the Most Ghibli. Today we’re covering 1997’s Princess Mononoke.

NOTES:

I actually didn’t remember a particular giant-ass tree going into this film, but it turns out Princess Mononoke has about four squares’ worth of giant-ass trees. Most shots in this movie are 95% tree.

Of note is this one in the center of the Forest Spirit’s pool, which is even broken halfway up, and still definitely a Giant-Ass Tree:
That’s Yakul in the lower right, for scale

ON HOLDING HANDS:

It may surprise you that San and Ashitaka are never seen holding hands while looking at a landscape. But they do, together, hold aloft the severed head of a godly embodiment of nature, while looking at the mountainous body of the godly embodiment of nature bearing down on them. In a way, this is 3000% the essence of that square.

Afterwards they wake up in a field of fresh grass created by the god’s “death”, and do indeed look at a wide, restored landscape. But they aren’t shown to be holding hands here.

In your headcanon, you might decide that San and Ashitaka are holding hands here or shortly afterward. But I have to follow the text to the letter or this whole exercise is moot.

Similarly, I thought about the Forest Spirit being “Someone” Floating Down from the Sky, but any perception that he falls slowly is really a matter of scale. His god juice plummets down, really. By leaving these 2 squares out, this movie missed out on 2 more bingos.

SCORE: 16/25 64%
BINGOS: 1

Join us next week, when we’ll be scoring 1992′s Porco Rosso.
